Wednesday Vignette

I have a small cluster of marginally hardy potted plants sitting outside the greenhouse door. I've been trying to make up my mind whether I really want to bring them in for the winter, so they sit just outside the door like people waiting for a ride at Disneyland. I suppose if I'm feeling merciful (or energetic), I'll run out when we get a freeze warning and haul them in.

Alstroemeria 'Rock and Roll' with Canna 'Tropicanna'

Both of these might survive in the ground in a mild winter, but probably won't do that well if left in pots, in the cold, winter wet.

Anna at Flutter & Hum hosts Wednesday Vignette. Check out her post here.

  1. I'm doing the same thing here; do I really want to lug giant pots of geraniums up the stairs to my mother's house? I know the answer, but still, I'm procrastinating. The two lovelies you have pictured are much more deserving than my ragtag band of pelargoniums, though. :-)

  2. That Alstroemeria has been a pleasant surprise here. Never would have expected that. I like it best when it is not blooming.

You take such good care of your plants. It really shows in the photos.

Here we lug pots of sensitive plants to sheltered damp spots when the hot dry Santa Ana winds blow. They've not been bad this year, so far.

  3. "Like people waiting for a ride at Disneyland" - a perfect description, Alison!

  4. I almost let my regularly scheduled WV post go up this morning, but at the last minute I pulled it and reflected upon the difference between yesterday and today. Quite literally from a beautiful sunny day to a dark and stormy one. That said, reading your words about gardening, not the state of the country, was refreshing. It's the passion that has brought us all together and will (hopefully) get us through this.

  5. Really nice contrast in colors and shape! I've got a few cordylines and phromiums in pots that are doing the same thing.

  6. Oh, how I wish I could lose myself in my garden right now.... We've been unusually busy at work today. I think people come in in search of beauty, and to take their mind of this new reality of ours. I'm still in denial...

  9. does not one just let the cannas die back over the winter? it is my first winter with them. one in ground. three in pots. same with the alstroemeria? if i could keep these both happy for the winter i'd encourage you to schlep in the greenhouse, on their behalf, you know.

Gardening is a solitary activity. But blogging about it is a social phenomenon! I don't make money from my blog by advertising, or use it to drive customers to a business. If you liked my post, or my writing or photography, or even just one picture or turn of phrase, I'd love to hear from you. That's how I get paid.
