Don't be fooled. Inside this thin coating of sweetness is a fiery core of total insanity.

Saying Good-Bye to Magellan

It's so hard to say good-bye to a beloved pet. I had to do that on Tuesday night -- say good-bye to my beloved kitty Magellan. We lost our other cat Lightning 2 years ago, right about this same time of year, so we're now a catless house. We got both of them at the same time, as kittens from a shelter in Massachusetts, and for a while when they were small, they were inseparable. Although they didn't come from the same litter, they had similar coloring, and we always thought of them as sisters. We renamed Lightning when we brought her home, but the shelter had given Magellan her unusual name, and we decided to keep it, despite it being the name of a male explorer.

When she was young, Magellan was the absolute stereotype of a cat -- somewhat aloof and mysterious. As she got older, after we lost Lightning, she became much more affectionate, always jumping into our laps as soon as we sat down on the couch. She would sometimes come upstairs to where I was playing on the computer, and in a bid for attention, she would sit right on the mouse pad, on top of the mouse, to keep me from using it. We didn't allow the cats into the bedroom, but every morning she would wait outside the bedroom door to greet us when we emerged. In the last few weeks of her life, she had stopped coming upstairs -- I assume, because they were just too hard to negotiate.

She liked going outside occasionally, but for the most part, she was an indoor cat. We never let her out without supervision, and she never left the confines of our fenced back garden.I don't know if it's obvious in the photos of her, but she had extra digits on her paws, with fluffy tufts of hair between them.

About a month ago, she was diagnosed with diabetes, but despite me giving her daily insulin, she continued to decline and never fully recovered. She spent a few days in the hospital while they stabilized her blood sugar. But after that she still suffered with dehydration and loss of appetite. I thought for a while she was on the mend, eating well and staying active. But she declined very suddenly on Tuesday, lost her coordination (I thought it was low blood sugar, but it wasn't). She couldn't stand or walk. I brought her to the vet's, and she survived the night, but just barely. On Wednesday morning I made the difficult, heart-wrenching decision not to prolong her suffering any more.

Good-bye, Sweetie

She was such a loving, trusting companion. I feel like I failed her. Right now, the house is still full of reminders of her. Every time I sit down, I expect her to jump in my lap. I keep looking for her in her favorite chair.

I'm going to miss her. So. Much.

Wednesday Vignette

In last week's Wednesday Vignette post, I promised pictures of wet plants, but didn't deliver. Here they are today (some of them anyway). Water droplets improve just about everything, but we are currently having an entire week of lashing wind and rain, and very dark days -- the kind of days where you need to leave the lights on all day long.

My pictures today are of one last Magnolia macrophylla leaf, hanging on as of last week, but after our crazy weather, it might have dropped to the ground by now.

Wednesday Vignette

Now that our string of frosty days has ended, and our temps have gone back up to a balmy 45, there is an overabundance of ugliness out in my garden, in the form of blackened or mushy foliage. But we also had rain last night, so everything this morning was dripping with water, which can enhance the  beauty of just about anything.

But that's not what I'm sharing a picture of today. After making the rounds of the front garden looking for photo ops, I went into the greenhouse to see what, if anything, looked good in there. One of the first things I spied was this harvestman, hanging out on the lime tree. He's a lovely predator, isn't he? Aphids have already taken up residence on some of my plants that are overwintering in there, so I hope he takes a nice big bite out of the population.

Hope you enjoyed this Wednesday Vignette, which is hosted by Anna at the blog Flutter and Hum. Check out her post here, as well as the other posts from bloggers sharing in the fun.

I'll share my photos of water-spotted foliage in a future post.

Somewhere Between Cold and Bloody Cold

Me: What's the temperature outside?

Nigel (peering at the thermometer): Somewhere between cold and bloody cold!

We just had a string of frosty days and nights during Thanksgiving week, and it's going to continue for the next few days. It was interesting to me to see where the frost lingered, both in the garden and while driving around. Nigel told me now, whenever anyone tells me to stick something "where the sun don't shine," I'll know exactly where that is -- basically the north side of everywhere.

Brrrrr! Jack Frost nipped at both my nose and my fingers while I took these pictures. I'd like to tell him where to stick it. I still have bulbs to get in the ground.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope you woke up this morning with things to be thankful for. I did.

Wednesday Vignette

Oh. Oh. Oh.

My entry for this week's Wednesday Vignette is a shot of a tattered seedpod from Lunaria annua (Honesty). The papery seedpod has been torn away, revealing a perfect O, draped with a few filaments of spider web. It reminds me of those flaming hoops that circus performers used to jump through on the Ed Sullivan Show.

Wednesday Vignette

For Wednesday Vignette, a shot of one last coneflower -- Echinacea 'After Midnight.' All the other Echinaceas in my garden are currently dried up and providing food for the many little birds - chickadees and juncos -- that flit through the beds looking for seeds. But this one final raggedy flower is hanging on.
