A Recent Trip to Molbak's

A couple of weeks ago, Catherine of A Gardener in Progress posted on FaceBook that Molbak's was having a sale on Hellebores, for 40% off. I couldn't pass up a deal like that, so the very next day I hopped in the car and drove to the nursery to check things out. I made my first plant purchases of the year, after having just written that one of my goals for the year was to buy fewer plants. How long did it take to forswear that vow? Didn't even last the month...

I brought along my old point-and-shoot camera and took some pictures. Molbak's was pretty barren, compared to how it was just before Christmas. I picked out some pretty Hellebores, and since they also had Heucheras on sale, I bought a couple of them too. Then I headed inside to the warmth.

According to the tag, this hanging plant is Lipstick plant. I can see why it's called that.

The red flowers and glossy leaves are very attractive.

These pieces of driftwood for hanging air plants are cute

You can use them for Bromelaids too!

They had some enormous cacti!

That one on the right is glass.

And some little ones too.

I've been looking for a while for a very ruffled Echeveria, and they had several, but I already had Hellebores and Heucheras and a couple of Cyclamen coum in my cart. Plus, I know exactly where the Hellebores and Heucheras are going. A new Echeveria would have to share a very crowded spot in front of my only South-facing window right now, with lots of other plants being overwintered.

The Agaves were tempting.

Agave 'Quadracolor'

Agave desmettiana 'Variegata'

Agave 'Blue Flame' doesn't look very blue

They also had an enormous glass Agave.

So what did I buy for my first plant purchases of 2013?

Starting from the 12:00 position, where you can see the Hellebore flower, and going clockwise: Helleborus orientalis 'Elly', Heuchera 'Electric Lime', Helleborus orientalis 'Frilly Kitten', 2 Cyclamen coum 'Silver Form', Helleborus orientalis 'Snow Fever', Heuchera 'Electric Lime', Helleborus lividus 'Pink Marble'
