Don't be fooled. Inside this thin coating of sweetness is a fiery core of total insanity.

Garden Bloggers Bloom Day -- April 2013

Well, we have had some cold, blustery weather lately. It was hard to get my little ones to hold still in the wind so I could take their pictures. Fortunately, in some cases I can crop my hand out of the photo to hide the fact that I'm giving them a little help.

I anticipate the wonderful flowers of our native pink-flowering currant every spring, it's a favorite shrub. I posted about its virtues last year here.

This was one that I moved back in January, and it hasn't missed a beat. Some of the other shrubs that I moved are leafing out late, but not this one.

A few days ago I stood about 10 feet away and watched a hummingbird as it darted from flower to flower on this shrub.

I still have plenty of spring ephemerals flowering.

Native Dicentra formosa

Trillium ovatum, whose petals start out white and age to pink

Yellow fawn lily/Erythronium grandiflorum

White fawn lily/Erythronium oregonum

Purple Dodecatheon/Shooting star

Dicentra 'Gold Heart' is also blooming profusely

Cute little Viola labradorica

Prostrate rosemary

Primula

Euphorbia

A different Euphorbia with an interesting flower

Hellebores are still looking good
White Fritillaria meleagris

Normally nodding purple Fritillaria meleagris is holding its head up bold as brass

My favorite hardy geranium, Geranium phaeum 'Samobor', is flowering, also despite having been moved when I reworked that back bed near the fence. I love the dark purple flowers, which match the dark purple splotch on its leaves.

Petals of Geranium paheum 'Samobor' are more recurved than other hardy Geraniums.

Daffodils, planted rather sparsely last fall, are blooming. I'm hoping they'll naturalize and fill in.

Anemone blanda, planted around the Daffodils' feet, are flowering now too and make a nice combo.

Our blustery weather beat some of the Daffodils into submission, so I cut them and carried them into the house to make a pretty vase to cheer up the kitchen. I didn't realize at least one has a nice scent (reminds me a bit of lilacs, but not so strong).

I tried to wash her pretty petticoat off, but she's a dirty girl.

Today, the fifteenth of the month, is Garden Bloggers Bloom Day, hosted by Carol from the blog May Dreams Gardens. If you follow the link, you will find plenty of posts from around the world, from other blogs celebrating a vast array of flowers.
